This film was created with Keila Hamed and Crystal Prusek. Natural State explores the effect nature can have on us and our willingness to accept or reject the outcome. Watch the preview below:
I teamed up with Jacob Taylor and we headed down to Boulder Creek to play around. I filmed him while he improvised, and the film below is the result of our afternoon.
STATIC DRIFT ABRIDGED
Static Drift Abridged was my senior thesis for my undergraduate degree at Kenyon College. For the project I choreographed a 10 minute piece, Static Drift, for the stage. For the second part of the project I took Static Drift and adapted it for film, creating a 4 minute film that I directed and edited. The film went on to win 2nd Place in CalArts Emerging Artist Competition at the 2016 Dance Camera West Film Festival.

"Static Drift" originated as a 10 minute stage piece, which I later developed into "Static Drift Abridged", the short dance film.
Every year at Kenyon, the dance department chooses two pieces to showcase at the regional ACDA (American College Dance Association) conference. For the March conference of 2016, Kenyon selected "Static Drift" along with a re-staged version of Bebe Miller's "Prey".
In January of 2016, production stages for "Static Drift Abridged" began. The filmed version of the dance was located in a dorm room, something that had been alluded to in the stage version by the presence of a door frame.
One of my biggest challenges with creating a film version of "Static Drift" was figuring out how to translate the language of the stage into the language of film. Using a camera allowed me to present the dance from angles that could never be viewed in a theater setting.
An early edit of "Static Drift Abridged" premiered at the regional ACDA conference at which "Static Drift" was performed. Out of the 23 films submitted to the conference, "Static Drift Abridged" was voted the audience favorite and displayed at the final Gala Concert of the conference.
During the filming process we shot Static Drift out in the snow. The outside shots didn't quite make it into the final cut of Static Drift Abridged, but still remains some of my favorite footage that was captured.
In May of 2016, "Static Drift Abridged" was shown at the Dance Camera West film festival in L.A. where it received the 2nd place CalArts Emerging Artist Award.
After Static Drift Abridged won the 2nd place CalArts Emerging Artists award, Kenyon College wrote an article that features some of the process behind the piece and my approach choreography.
